How We Can Help
How Counselling can help
At times, we can feel so overwhelmed. with life experiences, leaving us feeling anxious, fearful or hurt. If you are struggling and would like to think and feel differently about your situation, counselling can offer you the space and support to begin working through your difficulties.
Life experiences can trigger strong emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety or deep emotional pain. By talking openly and exploring your individual circumstances in a safe and confidential environment, you can begin to understand these feelings. Talking things through with a counsellor can help make sense of these feelings and understand how past or current experiences may be affecting you now. Simply being heard and understood can begin to reduce the intensity of emotional pain.
Counselling can help you to:
- Gain clarity about your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, making sense of emotions
- Better understand patterns that may be keeping you stuck and to understand how past or current experiences may be affecting you
- Learn healthier ways to manage anxiety, anger, stress, low mood or other overwhelming feelings
- Identify areas of your life you would like to change or improve by building coping strategies that feel realistic and personal to you.
- Develop greater self-awareness and self-confidence.
By working together, we can focus on the areas you would like work on, to make meaningful changes. Though better understanding and self-awareness, you can begin to build resilience to move forward. Overtime, this can help you feel more in control, more resilient and better equipped to handle life's challenges.

Gillick Competency
A small child under the age of 11 would be regarded as too young to make informed decisions so the decision would be up to the parents.
From 11-13 – the child is old enough to understand but not to give consent for something more serious, so again the parents would make the final decision.
13-16 years old is a bit of a grey area. Some children will know exactly what is going on, what they need and what they want. Others may not be quite so sure about what exactly they are agreeing to.
16-18 years old, a young person is old enough to make their own informed decisions about what they want to happen.
“As a general principle it is legal and acceptable for a young person to ask for confidential counselling without parental consent providing they are of sufficient understanding and intelligence.
